Buzzfeed puts Lochee’s pointless pedestrian crossing on the map

A zebra crossing in Dundee has been included in an international list of pointless things.

The markings are positioned between a car park and a flowerbed rendering them useless.

Now the crossing has popped up on internet site Buzzfeed, at number six in a list of the 31 most pointless things of all time.

Shoppers at the Stack retail park have asked why the crossing was left after the car park was redesigned last year.

Katie Gourlay, 38, a child-minder from Pentland, said: “It’s a bit of a puzzle. It would be better to have a crossing to the Gala Bingo instead of having it there.

“But it’s good that the kerb dips so it’s flat for buggies or wheelchairs you just don’t need the zebra crossing.”

Like many others, James Hagan, 76, approached the crossing on foot.

The retired weaver from Lochee said: “It’s a bit pointless. There’s a garden and a fence, so anyone who drove that way would have to be out of their skull on something.”

Lochee councillor Alan Ross was at the Stack when he read the article on the Buzzfeed site.

He said: “I was sitting in The Range in the coffee shop and read the article after someone had shared it with me.

“I thought it was quite funny. When you look at it, it isn’t really necessary, but maybe they were just trying to be extra safe.”

Although Councillor Ross found the list amusing, he recognised the concerns of pedestrian shoppers who wanted to reach other stores on the site, and vowed to bring the issue up with the owners TJ Morris.

“The problem is the council don’t own the Stack,” he said. “It’s owned by a company that leases out the buildings, but I will take it up with them.”

TJ Morris declined to comment.
