Police called to Carnoustie house after sudden death

Police called to Carnoustie house after sudden death

Police were called after a 37-year-old Montrose man died suddenly in Carnoustie.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at a flat in Balfour Place, just off Dundee Street. The man has been named as John Burke, who lived in Montrose High Street.

Residents in the area said they had seen police and an ambulance parked outside the house.

Gavin Newell, 28, said: “I looked out my window early in the evening and saw two police cars one was marked and one was unmarked.

“They were literally outside my front window going into the block of flats next to this one. The marked police car then left with the other one staying for some time.

“This area is usually pretty quiet, so seeing them out there was pretty strange.”

Angie Foreman, 41, said: “After the incident there was a lot of police activity in the area. They were knocking on doors asking people for information.”

“I thought it was a lot of police activity for a small-scale incident but I wasn’t too sure how serious it was.”

Meanwhile, members of the community in Montrose said police were outside the residence of John Burke on the day he died.

Sean Hughes, 23, who was at work at the time, said: “I went out for a cigarette in the afternoon and the whole top end of the High Street was full of police cars and vans.

“There were three police vans parked outside with police going in and out of the close just next to the shop.”

A police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to a residence in Carnoustie on September 11 following the reports of a sudden death of a 37-year-old man.

“There were no suspicious circumstances linked to the cause of his death. As with all sudden deaths, a report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

Mr Burke’s funeral took place in Dundee on Monday.
