MPs to investigate Dundee’s social issues during visit

A powerful Westminster committee is coming to Dundee to investigate major social issues.

The Scottish affairs committee will hold a public meeting in the city on Monday as part of its probe into both the impact of the so-called “bedroom tax” and zero-hours contracts, The Courier can reveal.

The group, which includes Scottish members of the Labour party, the SNP, the Liberal Democrats and two English Conservative politicians, have travelled across the country to seek evidence for their inquiries.

The latest visit will see Dundee West MP Jim McGovern in his base of operations, while Glenrothes representative Lindsay Roy is also a member of the committee.

For the former, the committee is looking at what impact housing reforms will have on households and families in Scotland, and also what powers the Scottish Government, local authorities, social landlords and others have to mitigate these impacts and how effectively they are being used.

The latter investigation arose after the committee raised concerns about the prevalence of zero-hours contracts in Scotland.

Mr McGovern said: “I’m delighted to bring the committee to Dundee at the invite of Councillor Lesley Brennan.”
