VIDEO: Watch as DC Thomson comic heroes take over our Kingsway wall

A giant art work paying tribute to some of Dundee’s most famous fictional characters is under way at the Kingsway home of The Courier.

DC Thomson has commissioned the piece of art on the wall of our Kingsway East premises. So far, the work features Dennis the Menace, his dog Gnasher and Desperate Dan but there is more to come.

A painting on the front of the building will feature Oor Wullie.

The characters, which are being created by mural maestros, are seen reading DC Thomson newspapers including The Courier.

Work on the masterpiece is expected to take up to 10 days, depending on the weather.

It is designed as a fun way of sharing some of Dundee’s most famous fictional sons with residents, commuters and those passing through the city.

Robin Lippett, from the Big Advert Company, said the planning behind the work had taken many months and has been a major collaborative work.

He said: “We began work on Monday morning and it will take anything between eight and 10 days to complete.

“An expert team of artists are now working to bring the figures to life. They began by marking out a grid pattern before sketching the outlines of the characters.

“Now they are involved in filling the colour. The work from now is very much done by the eye. It is a serious undertaking.”

The company has been behind some of Scotland’s biggest wall images, including at Edinburgh’s St James’ Centre and Glasgow’s George Square.

DC Thomson head of marketing (newspapers) Kirsty Matthews said: “DC Thomson is currently creating a permanent art installation on its Kingsway building.

“This installation is a fun way of sharing our much-loved titles and characters with new and existing readers.”

In a separate development, signs bearing the name of The Courier have been put up on a gantry over Dock Street in the city.
