Residents out in Clackmannanshire to greet Queen’s baton

Clackmannanshire residents were out in force for the arrival of the Queen’s baton relay yesterday.

The royal message crossed into the Wee County shortly before 9am, where it was greeted by pupils from Clackmannan Primary who hosted a Commonwealth art exhibition and street party.

Around 9.30am the procession rolled into Alloa, with baton-bearers making their way down Parliament Walk and King Street then arriving at the Town Hall.

Pupils from primary schools and Alloa Academy lined the route ahead of a Picnic in the Park organised by Alloa Community Council, featuring a performance of the Commonwealth anthem from a 700-strong choir.

The baton visited Clackmannanshire Community Healthcare Centre and Sauchie Hall, where another street party was held, complete with bouncy castle and funfair, organised by Sauchie and Fishcross Community Council.

Muckhart and Dollar put on celebratory events including a pipe band performance and sports demonstrations in the grounds of Dollar Academy.

In Alva, a Commonwealth Village was set up in Cochrane Park involving toddlers, Guides, Scouts, churches and Ochil Landscape Partnership.

Revellers enjoyed a Samba band, dancers, songs and Taste of the Commonwealth stalls.

Menstrie Community Council cooked burgers and a hog roast for the relay’s visit, with entertainment from Tulliallan Pipe Band and local group Coochie Coo.

The final baton-bearer, Team Scotland athlete Meggan Dawson-Farrell, brought the baton into the grounds of Lornshill Academy, Alloa, venue for the evening celebration which featured bands, dance groups and activities around the athletics track.
