A stunning £136,820 was raised for Cancer Research UK following a hugely successful Relay for Life in Arbroath.

The event took place over 24 hours from 11am on Saturday until yesterday at Arbroath Cricket Club following months of planning and fundraising.

Relay for Life chairman Ian Angus praised everyone who took part and hailed the community’s generosity following the staggering total.

He also said the amount raised could be even higher as more money is still to come in.

The event got under way with a minute’s applause in honour of the Tacoma surgeon who founded Relay for Life, which has raised nearly $5 billion worldwide.

Dr Gordy Klatt died at the age of 71 in August and more than 420 competitors who took part in Arbroath were also invited to dedicate an extra candle bag in his memory.

Arbroath policeman and Commonwealth Games bowling gold medal winner Darren Burnett started the survivors’ lap.

Cancer survivors then walked the first lap of the course, cheered and supported by members of the community.

Mr Angus said: “We have had a emotional rollercoaster of a weekend at Relay For Life. We went into the weekend having attended the funeral of our treasurer Morag Alexander.

“Morag was a much loved and respected member of the local community. We are dedicating this year’s relay to Morag.

“The committee and teams pulled out all the stops to deliver an event for the whole family and the people of Arbroath responded in typically generous fashion.

“We would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way to a special, if bittersweet, relay.”

As always, one of the main highlights was the Candle of Hope ceremony held on Saturday evening when competitors lit a candle in memory or support of someone who has been afflicted by cancer.

As walkers entered the home straight on Sunday morning, the team challenges continued with plenty of entertainment including a dunk tank and laser zone.

The public were also invited to walk their dogs for a small donation and support weary walkers as they entered the last 15 minutes.

At the end of Relay For Life, everyone joined together for a final lap to celebrate their fundraising achievements and look back on an unforgettable experience.
