All smiles as Happy Dundee video smashes through 100,000 views target

A Dundee parody of the hit-single Happy has smashed through 100,000 views online.

The viral video based on Pharrell Williams’ number one single features famous faces such as Lorraine Kelly, as well as other Dundonians.

The brainchild of Wave 102 presenter Gary Robinson and made by local film-maker and photographer Scott Sigsworth, the video was originally launched in May and has since garnered more than 100,000 views on YouTube.

The song, shot at numerous landmarks around the city and designed to showcase the City of Discovery, has also received more than 1,000 likes on the social media site. One of those who features in the four-minute clip, 26-year old Nicola Hutchison, said she was astounded by its success.

“It is absolutely fantastic that the video has been viewed so many times,” she said.

“I never thought that would be the case when I took part. It is a really remarkable success and one that is surely a great thing for Dundee.

“Apparently we are the smiley-est city in Scotland and it is great we have shown that happiness to so many people around the world,” she added.

Happy Dundee’s viral success comes at an exciting time for the city, as the Waterfront Redevelopment begins to take shape.

The video is one of dozens of parody clips which have appeared of the song and despite the Dundee version’s remarkable popularity, it still lags behind several others.

An Abu Dhabi version has garnered almost two million views, while one made by Iranian students which landed them in custody has enjoyed more than one and a half million hits.

Other cities across the globe, including New York, Sydney and London have produced similar videos.
