Dundee 1 Celtic 1: McPake ‘happy to be disappointed’

Dundee defender James McPake may have spoken in a riddle but he somehow summed up Dundee’s 1-1 draw with Celtic.

McPake rose after 49 seconds to nod the Dark Blues ahead, only for former Dens man Leigh Griffiths to level for the Hoops in the second half.

The scoreline stayed at 1-1 but the hosts came very close to beating the champions, which led McPake to say: “I am happy that I am disappointed. Now there’s a quote for you!

“It has to be a positive that I am sitting here disappointed to have only drawn 1-1 with Celtic. That shows how far the club have come under the manager.

“We are still unbeaten going into the international break. We would have taken the hand off you had you offered us that, although we could have had more points in my opinion.

“It’s just the start, though, as there is more to come from this team.”

McPake’s opener was created by the pace and ability of wide man Phil Roberts, who gave Celtic wing-back Emilio Izaguirre a torrid time in the first half before tiring later in the game.

It was a blistering start and McPake said: “If there has been a part of our game that has not been great this season it has been the way we have started games.

“That has been something the manager has been telling us to do, to come flying out of the traps.

“We knew we had to be at it from the off and it was a great ball from Phil. It was good to get my head on the end of one of the corners because it has been a while.”

Dens boss Paul Hartley added: “I think, on overall chances, we created the better ones in the game.

“We had good situations, particularly in the second half when when Martin Boyle was through on goal a couple of times.

“I think we have come a long way and I thought we were excellent. We remain unbeaten but we are disappointed not to have won today.”
