Man jumped on to car bonnet and smashed windscreen with head

A man smashed a car windscreen with his head after launching himself at the moving vehicle in an Angus town centre.

Minutes earlier, 28-year-old Jason Harvey had been arguing with one of the passengers in the vehicle and took revenge by jumping from between parked cars in Arbroath and on to its bonnet.

He escaped serious injury and ran off, leaving the occupants of the Ford Focus shocked but unhurt.

Harvey was ordered to pay £200 for the windscreen replacement and fined £300 at Forfar Sheriff Court.

The accused, of Keptie Street in Arbroath, admitted culpable and reckless conduct in the May 12 incident on Hill Street.

Depute fiscal Jill Drummond told the court the incident happened around 9pm.

Occupants of the Ford Focus were passing along the street when they saw a friend arguing with the accused and stopped to let him get in the car, she said.

“As the vehicle then slowed to go over a speed bump, the accused appeared from between two parked vehicles.

“He lunged two-footed on to the bonnet, shattering the windscreen before rolling off the passenger side.”

When he was arrested, Harvey told police: “It was me, am I going to jail? I’ll pay for it.”

Defence solicitor Ian Flynn said: “He had been drinking with his father and brother and had been in an altercation with a man who got into the car.

“Stupidly he jumped on it and it was actually his head that came into contact with the windscreen.

“He put himself in great danger, never mind the occupants of the car.”

Sheriff Gregor Murray told Harvey: “You haven’t been in trouble for a couple of years but this was an act of utter stupidity.”
