Dunfermline’s Joe Cardle can’t wait to see boxer brother play for the Hoops

Joe Cardle.

Joe Cardle’s brother Scott is the British lightweight boxing champion but the Dunfermline player reckons he might just throw in the towel when it comes to facing a certain Vinnie Jones on the football pitch.

The two siblings grew up as Celtic fans and it will be a dream come true for Scott when he pulls on a Hoops jersey at East End Park on Sunday.

He is part of the Celtic legends squad that will take on the Pars legends in a charity match to honour the memory of Jock Stein, who managed both clubs with distinction.

However, Joe is certain his brother will be boxing clever when it comes to facing former Wimbledon hard man and now Hollywood actor Jones who has agreed to play for Dunfermline.

Cardle said: “Scott is coming up for the game and I am over the moon for him.

“We both grew up as Celtic supporters so for him to put on the Hoops will be a great occasion for him.

“I can’t wait to see the game, not just because my brother is playing in it but there will be players taking part that I grew up supporting as a Celtic man.

“There are also some great Dunfermline players as well that I am looking forward to watching.

“Scott has a fight two weeks on Saturday in Liverpool.

“So I think he will have a quick five minutes just so he can pull on the Hoops and get a wee runabout.

“I think if Vinnie Jones is kicking around, then five minutes will be long enough!

“Scott used to be really good at football. We were both at Burnley together for four years.

“He was a midfielder but he fell into the boxing and I went full-time with my football.

“We still have a wee kickabout in the summer.

“I do a bit of training with him as well but as soon as the gloves come out, I leave the gym that’s me done for the day.”

Cardle revealed that his brother wants him to carry his title belt out in Liverpool when he fights Gary Buckland in Liverpool but the Pars player faces a race against time to make it after a game at Stenhousemuir.

He said: “Scott has had a great professional career so far.

“This is just his third year into it and he is unbeaten.

“I am going to try to get down for his next fight after our game at Stenhousemuir.

“He is wanting me to walk in ahead of him carrying his belt as his brother.

So hopefully I can get there and he can keep his unbeaten run going.”

Before all that, there is the “small” matter of a top-of-the-table League One clash with Forfar to be negotiated today and Cardle is expecting a difficult test.

He said: “It will be a tough game but we want to continue the good start we have had to the season.

“Obviously, we had the cup win there a few weeks ago but we know it is a hard place to go to.

“They always seem to turn up for this sort of occasion but we are firing on all cylinders so hopefully we have a chance of another three points.”
