Dundee City Council chiefs say they will discuss residents’ concerns over “dim” streetlights across the city.
Several community groups in various areas have raised concerns that new lighting installed on streets is much dimmer than before.
It was also raised at two Local Community Planning Partnership meetings last week, in Lochee and Stobswell.
Ron Neave, chairman of Fintry Community Council, said: “In the area near the lights at the Mains and along to Gillburn Road, the dim lighting is giving people a lot of problems as this is a key commuter route.
“A lot of folk have mentioned how dimly lit the footpaths and roads are since the new lighting system was introduced.
“Another point that has been raised is that safety should come into this. Particularly in the schemes, the lighting helped to combat break-ins to garden sheds, garages and homes.
“Across the city there are problems. At a meeting this week, people from St Mary’s, Strathmartine, Coldside, Stobswell, Fintry and Douglas all mentioned lighting being a major issue. It’s only a matter of time before unnecessary motor accidents start happening.”
Dave MacDougall, of the Stobswell Forum, said the lack of lighting in streets could threaten the safety of older residents in the area.
He said: “There’s a significant difference in the street lights that can be noticed along the likes of Albert Street and Balmore Street, to name only a couple.
“The dimness of the lighting could threaten the safety of older residents walking along the streets at night.”
A council spokeswoman said: “The Street Lighting Partnership manager met with the Building Stronger Communities group to discuss concerns.
“We will be looking into any issues on a case-by-case basis.”
