43 jobs at risk as Fishers announces plan to close Aberfeldy laundry

Aberfeldy has been dealt a major jobs blow with the announcement that a major employer is to close its local operation.

Cupar-based company Fishers told told staff at its laundry in the town of its potential closure.

The company has now entered into a 30-day period of formal consultation with its 43 permanent staff in Aberfeldy.

The plan to close the Aberfeldy operation follows a company-wide review. Fishers currently has six laundries and is to open a new one in Coatbridge to serve customers in Glasgow, the West of Scotland and the North West of England.

The firm says that it will explore all possible alternatives to redundancy for its Aberfeldy staff, including helping them to apply for roles at other sites in Perth and Glasgow.

The company say more than half of the Aberfeldy staff have already indicated a willingness to consider moving.

Managing director Michael Jones said: “Aberfeldy is our oldest site and has served the company well.

“However, its location within a residential area, its layout and restrictions on utilities combine to make it no longer viable for us in today’s competitive market.

“The potential move away from Aberfeldy will be a sad one for us but is in the best interests of the business.

“We are working hard with our staff there to explore every option for them and I am particularly pleased that so many have already said that they want to stay with Fishers by moving to another of our sites.”
