Dundee boss Paul Hartley looking for same derby desire from his players

Paul Hartley.
Paul Hartley.

Dundee ended a long wait for a derby win over United last month now Dens boss Paul Hartley has demanded more of the same from his players when the two sides meet again tomorrow.

The Dark Blues finally regained bragging rights thanks to a 3-1 victory at home with goals from Greg Stewart, James McPake and Paul Heffernan.

Hartley is aware the Tangerines will be gunning for revenge, especially as a win could secure them fourth place in the Premiership table and possible European qualification.

So he is looking for his players to hit the heights they attained in the last derby.

He said: “I think there’s always pressure to win a derby game.

“It doesn’t matter when the game is or what there is to play for.

“It is massive for both sets of supporters and players alike because you want to finish the season on a high.

“We would love to get a good result down at Tannadice.

“It’s a game we look forward to.

“We got a good result against them the last time when we beat them at Dens so we want to do that again and try to get a positive outcome.

“We’ll need to be at our best if we want to win, in terms of on the ball and off the ball and how we work.

“We set the tone early in the game the last time. It needs to be that again.

“It will be a typical derby, frantic for a period of time and there should be a good atmosphere.

“It would be nice to finish the season on a high.

“It takes you into the summer time in a good frame of mind.

“We want to do that going into the close-season break.

“And United will be saying the same thing also but it’s one where we want to do well in.”

Dundee could face a relatively-unknown threat in United striker Robbie Muirhead who has established himself in the Tangerines starting XI in recent weeks.

However, Hartley is sure he has the players who can cope with the former Kilmarnock front man.

The manager said: “I think with James McPake, Thomas Konrad and Kosta Gadzhalov at the back, they’ve done pretty well against good players this season.

“And we’ve got players who can hurt teams on their day like Greg Stewart and Luka Tankulic.

“So we’ve got a good forward line ourselves although he (Muirhead) has been a danger in the last couple of weeks.

“He is a player we obviously will need to watch on the day.”
