More famous names sign up for McRae Rally Challenge at Knockhill

Hannu Mikkola and Arne Hertz are delighted to be back at the controls of a Quattro.
Hannu Mikkola and Arne Hertz are delighted to be back at the controls of a Quattro.

Former world rally champion Hannu Mikkola and long time co-driver Arne Hertz are the latest stars to sign up for the McRae Rally Challenge at Knockhill.

Sharing the spotlight will be a number of rare Audi Quattros.

They’ll be part of the special two-day rally celebrating the 20th anniversary of Colin McRae’s world rally championship win.

Mikkola was always a great favourite with the Scottish crowds, especially in the days when the week-long annual RSAC Scottish Rally visited all points of the compass.

Hannu said: “Scotland has always been a favourite place of mine to rally in the UK, and I have been fortunate enough to do really well there too.

“It’s also great to support this event and celebrate a fantastic achievement in British motorsports and remember what Colin accomplished in the sport.”

The latest star to sign up for the McRae Rally Challenge is the “real” Stig.

Long before Top Gear made the tame racing star famous, Swede Stig Blomqvist was showing the world his skills as he powered to world rally championship glory.

Now he’ll be lining up with Mikkola and Hertz.

Another poignant entry has come from Quintin Milne whose father Donald Milne was instrumental in the young McRae’s early success when he provided rally cars and sponsorship.

Another star to sign up for the Knockhill event on May 16 and 17 has never contested a rally in his life.

“Flash” Gordon Shedden is one of the UK’s most popular and successful motor racing drivers and has been “talked into” entering this unique event.

Joining Gordon will be world rally championship co-driver Stuart Louden, who joked: “I’ve been in scarier positions with worse drivers.

“Gordon knows where he’s going so that will help me out.”

Gordon added: “Stuart’s just coming along to take selfies,” but when pushed, he said “We’re here mainly to have fun, we won’t be going out to win anything,”

But there was a glint in his eye when he said it.

When did you ever hear a racing driver say he wasn’t going out to win?
