A man who died in a horrific two-vehicle accident on the A90 Dundee to Perth road on Tuesday has been named by police.

Scott McCallum, who was 36 and from Maryhill in Glasgow, died when his van was involved in a collision with an HGV.

The crash which happened shortly after 3pm in a lay by near Kinfauns on the Perth-bound carriageway caused major tailbacks.

The inside lane of the road was closed while the incident was dealt with, restricting traffic to a single lane.

The reduced speeds meant that traffic heading to Perth built up, with lengthy delays for motorists. At one stage the traffic stretched back beyond St Madoes, more than four miles.

Police were quickly joined at the scene by an ambulance crew and two Scottish Fire and Rescue Service tenders and a heavy rescue unit from Perth and another crew from Dundee.

Mr McCallum was removed while the vehicles involved a white Mercedes van and a lorry were covered by a tarpaulin until they could be removed.

“The white van was very badly damaged,” said one eyewitness who passed the accident shortly after it happened.

“It looked like there had been a massive impact; there was debris around the scene. The rear of the lorry was damaged and the van, which appeared to have had a trailer, had become wedged up against the lorry on the river side.

“It was a pretty horrific sight. Thetraffic on the carriageway heading towards Dundee was slowing up as they became aware of the accident.

“Although the traffic was moving, at times it came to a virtual standstill.”

The emergency services remainedon-site over the peak-time rushhour, with many motorists bypassing the accident by heading off the A90at Kinfauns.

Accident investigators also attended in an effort to establish thecircumstances of the accident, which happened in dry, bright conditions.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident to contact them on 101.
