Arctic winds set to bite as winter rolls in

It has been a summer to remember but Courier Country had better brace itself for plummeting temperatures as an autumn chill sets in.

Although temperatures pushed 20C in some areas on Tuesday, people should prepare for a near 10C drop over the next couple of days.

An icy arctic wind is also set to bite, sweeping in to replace the tropical air streams that allowed the country to bask in such mild weather for this time of year.

Met Office forecaster Helen Chivers said: “From today onwards we are looking at temperatures by day of around 11C, which is a considerable drop from what we’ve been used to recently.

“What will also make it feel colder is that the wind is going to pick up during the day and that chilly wind will make a big difference.

“Despite temperatures being up to 9C lower it should still be a fine, dry day with sunny weather, but the steady northerly winds will make it feel that bit cooler.”

It might also be time to break out the winter blankets as overnight temperatures drop to as low as 3C.

However, there is better news heading into the weekend.

Mrs Chivers added: “Temperatures over the next couple of days will be a tad below normal as we would normally expect about 13C during the day for this time of year.

“As we go into the weekend Scotland looks like the place to be as it will have high pressure settling down over the country and temperatures will reach back up to around 13C into Saturday.”
