Councillor blasts ‘out of order’ Travellers after mess left at Camperdown Park

The Travellers moved from Camperdown, leaving bags of soiled nappies.

New Traveller camps have been set up across Dundee after the Traveller super camp on Camperdown Park broke up at the weekend.

The group had been told to move on by council officers and complied with the terms of a legal notice, but they left mounds of rubbish behind them.

As many as 17 caravans have set up camp between South Road and the Kingsway, pushing aside large boulders to gain access to an area of green space close to the Lynch Sports Centre.

Elsewhere, the owners of more than 20 caravans have taken up residence in Caird Park, opposite Mains Castle.

Lochee Councillor Tom Ferguson said residents were “far from happy”.

Dundee City Council staff were on site at Camperdown Park to clear the refuse.

One witness said: “It’s extremely unpleasant and the waste is all over the place.

“I saw the council workers lifting dirty nappies off the nearby football pitches.”

Environment convener Craig Melville described the mess as “unacceptable”, but said it had been expected.

“To leave that amount of rubbish behind in a public park is out of order. There is no question about who has done this.

“It has happened too many times in the past for us to think any differently.”

Dundee City Council said it had “started the legal process” to have the travellers removed from Caird Park, while the land on South Road is privately owned.

Housing convener John Alexander told The Courier earlier this month that the council is working to formulate a new traveller strategy for the city, describing the current system as “broken”.
