Aberdeen fans are the worst-behaved away support when attending matches in Dundee, The Courier can reveal.

The Dons visited the City of Discovery four times last season, playing two matches against both United and Dundee.

Figures obtained by The Courier through Freedom of Information legislation show that four Aberdeen fans were arrested at the four games while 55 other spectators were ejected from Dens Park and Tannadice during the matches.

At one match between Dundee United and Aberdeen last year, 33 Dons supporters were ejected from Tannadice by stewards, either because they were drunk or smoking in the ground.

Two Aberdeen supporters were arrested at the same game one for attempting to enter the ground while drunk and breach of the peace and another for indecent breach of the peace.

The only other match to have a similar number of ejections was the Dundee derby at Dens Park on March 3 this year. Two United fans were kicked out of the ground for smoking while 21 members of the home support were ejected for the same reason.

Another 10 Dark Blues fans were ejected for misbehaviour or refusing to take their identified seats.

The single largest number of arrests at a single match took place when Dundee United hosted Dinamo Moscow in the Europa League last August.

Eight people including seven United fans were arrested, although only three of these arrests occurred on the night of the match.

The seven United fans are currently on trial at Dundee Sheriff Court. They deny being engaged in behaviour likely to incite public disorder.

Domestically, the most arrests took place last Boxing Day when Celtic visited Dens Park. One Dundee fan was arrested for assault while four Celtic fans were arrested by police.

Two Bhoys fans were arrested outside the ground one for breach of the peace and attempting to pervert the course of justice, the other for being drunk and incapable.

The other two were arrested within Dens Park, the first for breach of the peace and the second was arrested under the Offensive Behaviour Act, which prohibits sectarian chanting.

One Rangers fan was arrested for the same offence at a cup game against Dundee United in February last year.

Most ejections from the two grounds are due to fans smoking 102 out of 177 ejections at the two grounds are for this offence.

Superintendent Jim Leslie said clubs and the police work together to ensure each match is properly policed and stewarded.

“Every game we look at the intelligence relating to the match, which looks at previous fixtures, the number of expected fans and the significance of the match. Based on that we then give the match a rating A, B or C.

“All the ejections are made by the stewards and the police are there to support them.”

But he added the overwhelming number of fans in Dundee, and those who travel to the city for games, are well behaved.

“I think, on the whole, we do have good home support and it is something we are keen to see continue,” he said.

A Dundee United spokesman added: “In compliance with the Smoking, Health & Social Care (Scotland) Act, 2005 and the Prohibition of Smoking in Certain Premises (Scotland) Regulations, 2006 Tannadice Park has been designated a no smoking stadium.

“Our ground regulations state that failure to comply with this legislation will see the individual ejected from the stadium with potential penalties and prosecution under the act.”
