Proclaimers asked to go extra mile for Dundee film-makers

Two Dundee film-makers are hoping a social media campaign will convince The Proclaimers to make a cameo appearance in their next production.

Stuart Hamilton, 31, and Liam Johnston, 33, are the creators of online show Sons of Spielberg, a comedy about the trials and tribulations of three aspiring film-makers.

After completing two episodes of the programme, they hit a Proclaimers-shaped wall when trying to complete the third, which requires a closing shot of Auchtermuchty’s famous singing twins.

Now they are hoping Craig and Charlie Reid will agree to film a brief appearance before their gig at the Caird Hall on Saturday night.

“Liam and I and are huge fans of The Proclaimers and have covered 500 Miles and Let’s Get Married,” said Stuart.

“Episode three is about the characters trying to meet The Proclaimers but not getting to although, for the audience, the kicker is they appear at the end.”

Stuart said as well as being fans of the band, he and Liam targeted The Proclaimers because of their local connections.

“The Proclaimers are really well-known and famous in the United States but we thought someone we know must know them or be able to get in touch with them.

“We’ve started doing a call out on Twitter and Facebook to try to get in touch with them.”

The film-makers have even produced their own video appeal to the twins which has been posted on YouTube.

To make matters worse, Stuart and Liam have already met The Proclaimers and nearly got the shot they needed but the musicians had to leave before they could be filmed.

“I don’t think they knew anything about it,” said Stuart.

He added the struggle to get The Proclaimers has helped provide inspiration for Sons of Spielberg.

“It’s about three film-makers at the beginnings of their careers and the adventures,” he said.

“It’s kind of based on real-life and our experiences working in the world of corporate video, although taken to extremes.”

The Proclaimers shot to fame in 1987 when their songs (I’m Gonna Be) 500 Miles and Letter From America, featured on their debut album Sunshine on Leith, enjoyed chart success.

They have since gone on to have a string of hits.

A musical based on their songs called Sunshine on Leith was premiered at Dundee Rep in 2007 and was filmed in 2013.
