Dundee United’s Charlie Telfer chasing Europa League dream

Charlie Telfer believes Dundee United’s European ambitions are firmly back on track following Saturday’s morale-boosting win over Aberdeen at Tannadice.

The Tangerines triumphed thanks to a solitary Robbie Muirhead first-half goal with the victory finally extinguishing the Dons’ slim title hopes.

Ronny Deila’s Celtic are now confirmed as Premiership champions however from a United viewpoint, the win’s greater significance was the fact that it meant they leapfrogged St Johnstone into fourth spot on goal difference, just four points behind Inverness, who they play on Tuesday night.

Telfer insists United will now kick on in their remaining fixtures after what he admits has been sticky spell for the team and secure European football for next term.

He said: “We are just taking it one game at a time.

“First and foremost, we are trying to improve as a team.

“We have a bit of form back now and we are looking to pick up and secure as many points as we can between now and the end of the season.

“First half of the season, we were brilliant, we got into the cup final and then we have had this bad patch.

“So it would be great if we could get a European spot.

“It was a hard-fought game against Aberdeen but I thought we did well.

“We were a bit ropey at the first 15 minutes at the start of the second-half but I thought we got it together and I felt we deserved it.”

Telfer says the result against the Dons is another indication that United are getting back to their best.

When asked if the Tangerines had proved a point or two against Aberdeen, he said: “Definitely. Despite the results, we have picked up a bit of form in terms of playing better than we had been so it was a great result.

“In weeks gone by we have maybe lost a rubbish goal and then we have had to try to get back into it so it was good to get the goal and something to hold onto.”
