Dundee’s Lord Provost to retire in 2017

Lord Provost Bob Duncan said he misses cakes but is dedicated to his new diet.
Lord Provost Bob Duncan said he misses cakes but is dedicated to his new diet.

Dundee’s Lord Provost has revealed his intention to retire just weeks after suffering a minor stroke.

Bob Duncan, 69, said he had been through a “very scary experience” and intended to dedicate himself to his family and a healthier lifestyle.

Mr Duncan, who became Lord Provost in 2012, said: “I’ll be retiring in May 2017 and won’t stand for another term.

“The time has come for a new Lord Provost to make his mark on the city and for me to spend more time with my wife.

“I leave Dundee a more attractive and vibrant city having raised its profile but, after 14 years as a councillor, I’m looking forward to retiring.”

His decision to step down came before his recent health scare, which has seen him dramatically alter his routine and diet.

Mr Duncan said it took the stroke to highlight issues with his diet and weight.

It may have taken place on Remembrance Sunday, though he didn’t immediately realise what had happened.

“I didn’t think I was fat before but now, having talked to doctors and learnt a bit more, I think I’m very fat,” he said.

“But I’ve already lost a little weight so things are improving and I’ve never eaten so many green vegetables in my life!

“It’s well worth it as I don’t want it to happen again.

“It was a shock to realise that a stroke isn’t unusual for people of my age and weight.

“I was like a rake until I was 40 and then the weight and diet snuck up on me. I hope my experience will provide a warning to others.”
