Driver injured after car overturns on A90 in Perthshire

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after his car flipped over and struck a tree on a busy Perthshire commuter route.

Emergency services were called to the A90, near Glencarse, just after 7.30am following reports that a vehicle had gone off the road.

The black Audi A3 careered off the carriageway, hit the grass verge and ended up on its roof at the side of the road, having struck a tree beforecoming to a rest.

The driver of the car, who is 52, was taken by ambulance to NinewellsHospital.

His condition was described as“critical”.

The dual carriageway stretch was affected for more than four hours while collision investigators tried to establish the cause of the accident.

The damaged vehicle was recovered from the roadside just before noon.

The road closure caused two-mile tailbacks, with commuters travelling from Perth to Dundee reporting an extra hour had been added to their journey times.

Traffic was diverted along theSt Madoes sliproad, past the Glencarse Hotel.

A Scottish Ambulance Servicespokeswoman said: “We received an emergency call shortly after 7.30am.

“A local ambulance crew went to the scene and found the car overturned.

“One man was taken by ambulance to Ninewells. He was in a critical condition.”

A team of 10 firefighters also attended.

A fire service spokesman said the driver was removed at the scene and taken to hospital. “No cutting gear was required to remove him from thevehicle,” he added.

Later, the same stretch of road was partially closed again as Scottish Water engineers carried out repairs to adamaged water main near Inchyra Lodge.

One lane of the eastbound dualcarriageway was shut just before 3pm during the recovery operation.
