Perth ‘eyesore’ site transformed by £6.4 million housing project

The final phase of a Perth affordable housing project to transform an “eyesore” site at Jeanfield Road has been completed.

Replacing a dilapidated Victorian building which had been damaged by fire, and an unkempt area of open ground, the final flats in the £6.4 million project have now been handed over to Perth and Kinross Council.

The development consists of some 62 energy efficient affordable homes.

Two organisations Hillcrest Housing Association and the council backed the project.

The site now houses 48 flats and a further 14 homes which form a small courtyard.

The Hillcrest properties are let for social rent by Hillcrest Housing Association and for mid-market rent by Northern Housing Company.

The council properties are also rented.

The project has not been completely straightforward: the main contractor, Muirfield Contracts, collapsed part way through it.

Cullross stepped in as main contractor at that point and employed many of the sub-contractors who lost employment with the demise of Muirfield.

Despite the setback the development has been hailed as a success, and everyone involved is delighted with the end result.

Steven Garry, director at Cullross, said: “This final handover is the culmination of a huge amount of work for Cullross, not always plain sailing.

“We are thrilled to be handing over these units to happy clients, and hope that our working relationship with both of them continues to flourish.”

Hillcrest project manager Graeme Keillor said: “We’re delighted to reach completion with this development and be able to hand over such high quality homes to our tenants.

“The range of tenures at Jeanfield means that we are creating foundations for the future to the community of Perth.

“It is always satisfying to see a site which had previously been an eyesore to the area be brought back into use and bring benefit to the community.

“The design and build of these properties is of a very high standard and will provide our tenants with well- insulated and energy efficient homes.”

The project has drawn a lot of attention since it was started in 2014. It was shortlisted for a Scottish Home Award last October and was visited by Housing Minister Margaret Burgess in December.
