Video: St Johnstone roll out the red carpet to give fan a day to remember

For many St Johnstone fans, a 0-0 draw at home to Kilmarnock would not be a match to savour.

But for Perth’s John Donnelly, it was a game he will never forget.

Wheelchair-bound John (27), a patient at Rachel House hospice in Kinross, was invited to McDiarmid Park for the match.

But this was no ordinary trip to the see the Saints.

John met the entire first-team squad before the match, with each player posing for photographs and signing his programme. He was also presented with a replica shirt signed by all the players.

Manager Tommy Wright then paid John and his dad a surprise visit in the guest lounge, where they handed over a Saints goodie bag which included a scarf, hat, pennant, water bottle and t-shirts.

“It was great to meet John and his father at the match last Saturday. I’m really glad he enjoyed himself and was able to meet all the players pre-match, including his favourite player Steven MacLean,” said the manager afterwards.

Carla Halckett, activities facilitator at Chldren’s Hospice Association Scotland, which runs Rachel House, said: “John is a young lad who comes to use Rachel House, and has been using us for a number of years.

“He lives in Perth with his dad, is an avid St. Johnstone supporter and was absolutely over the moon with this opportunity to come along and watch the team play.”

St. Johnstone communications officer Ross Cunningham added: “All the players and staff were delighted to meet John and have him at the match versus Kilmarnock.

“CHAS do outstanding work in Perth and Kinross and throughout Scotland, so we were only too happy to have John, his dad and two members of staff from the charity here as guests.”
