Man scarred girlfriend after she took sip of his beer

A man smashed a mug in his girlfriend’s face because she took a sip of his beer.

Craig Smith scarred Alana Brown, inflicting five wounds in the attack on October 8 last year.

She required medical treatment for the cuts, one of which will never fully heal, Perth Sheriff Court was told.

On Thursday, Smith, 37, a prisoner at Perth, was jailed for 10 months after admitting assaulting Ms Brown to her injury and permanent disfigurement.

The court heard Smith had been drinking at the time of the attack, which took place at Ms Brown’s then flat in Tay Street, Perth.

They he had been seeing each other for four months.

Depute fiscal Stuart Richardson said: “He was at the flat Monday October 7 overnight into Tuesday October 8. … The complainer went across to Mr Smith’s can of beer and took a drink from it. That seemed to annoy Mr Smith and he picked up the complainer’s mug of tea.

“She moved across to retrieve her tea and, at that point, Mr Smith swung the mug towards her. It came free from his hand and struck her on the forehead, shattering as it struck her. Immediately she began to bleed from her forehead.”

Solicitor David Holmes, defending, said it had been an “argument over nothing at all.”

He went on: “The relationship is now at an end. There was no follow-up blow, there was no preceding blow.

“This was not a harm that was intended. He regrets that it happened and he regrets the harm that he caused to the complainer and apologises for that.”

Passing sentence, Sheriff William Wood said that the incident was the “equivalent of throwing a glass in a pub”.
