Former Dundee United midfielder Darren Petrie will sign for Raith Rovers today.

Stark’s Park boss Ray McKinnon expressed his delight at the capture of the 19-year-old midfielder who he had on loan when he was manager at Brechin.

Petrie became a free agent at the end of last season when he was released by the Tangerines and McKinnon moved swiftly to snap him up after being handed the reins at Rovers last week.

The manager said: “I am delighted to get Darren on board for next season.

“He is a great signing for us and I think he will be a huge asset. He is a recognised midfielder but can also play in other positions so his versatility will be very useful.

“He is hungry to do well and I know all about his qualities from his time at Brechin City.

“He is a natural left-footer and is mature having captained the Scotland under-19s.

“So all in all, he has the sort of attributes we are after.”

McKinnon has also re-signed striker Mark Stewart on a new two-year deal.

The 26-year-old former Dundee forward ended the season as Rovers’ top scorer on 10 goals for the campaign, although his future at the Kirkcaldy club was uncertain.

However, Stewart met with his new boss on Monday afternoon and thrashed out a contract that will keep him at Raith until 2017 despite approaches from two other Scottish clubs and the possibility of a move down south.

Rovers though are set to lose another midfield player with Martin Scott following Ryan Conroy out of the exit door at Stark’s Park.

Conroy has opted to join Queen of the South however former Livingston, Ross County and Hibs player Scott is also looking for a new club after deciding to leave Kirkcaldy.

The 29-year-old, who played in 32 games last season and scored twice, said: “I am looking for a new challenge and that could be in Scotland, England or beyond.

“If something comes up in Scotland, I will look into it but maybe after 12 seasons here it is time to try something different.”
