Dunfermline boss Allan Johnston’s double delight at goals for and against

Allan Johnston.
Allan Johnston.

In terms of league goals scored, Dunfermline are currently the best of British, hitting the back of the net more often than the likes of Celtic, Rangers and Manchester City so far this season.

That 37-goal haul is something which obviously delights East End Park boss Allan Johnston.

However, the Pars manager has admitted he is equally as pleased with his side’s defensive record with last Saturday’s clean sheet in the 4-0 win over Forfar being the fifth his players have posted in their last seven games.

Johnston said: “The defensive record has been excellent recently and we can still improve.

“We defend as a team and attack as a team and everybody must take the plaudits.

“Even with the goals we have scored, you need to stop them at the other end. You can’t afford to lose two or three goals every game and it pleasing to have kept a few clean sheets.

“We have had five in the last seven games.

“It keeps the defenders focused and determined to keep the run going.

“With the players we have in the final third, we always create chances so if we manage to keep clean sheets, then we have a great chance of winning the game. That is our focus.”

Dunfermline will look to cement their place at the top of the League One table when they travel to face local rivals Cowdenbeath at Central Park tomorrow.

The Pars have beaten the Blue Brazil twice already this season winning 5-1 and 7-1 and they will start as firm favourites against the side sitting in second bottom place in the league table.

However, Johnston is certainly taking nothing for granted against Colin Nish’s team who have added a raft of reinforcements since their early-season woes.

The manager added: “We have a good record away from home.

“But this is a really hard game at the weekend with the surroundings and the pitch being tight.

“We know how difficult a match it is going to be.

“When you look at their team as well, it has totally changed since the start of the season. They have brought in some good players and you can see that by their results.

“They are a lot harder to beat and they are a threat from set-pieces but we know what to expect.”
