Lorry driver fined after drunken rage saw partner flee home

A lorry driver left his partner so terrified during a drunken rage that she fled their home.

Bryan Burns shouted and swore at Caroline Begg before throwing a kettle to the floor, punching a door and seizing her.

On Thursday at Perth Sheriff Court he admitted the offence, which took place at his home in Clayton Road, Bridge of Earn, on June 22.

Perth Sheriff Court heard that the 38-year-old had an argument with his partner.

Depute fiscal Tina Dickie said: “At about 8pm the complainer was at the locus with her daughter and other children. The accused arrived home shortly thereafter and began to drink alcohol.

“An argument started between the complainer and the accused and the accused then went to bed.

“At 10.30pm the accused got up and went down to the kitchen. At the same time the complainer went down and the argument resumed.

“The accused then threw the kettle on the floor and punched the door before taking hold of the complainer. At that time police were called.

“The complainer and the children were waiting outside the locus when police arrived and appeared visibly upset.”

Burns’ solicitor said he regretted the incident and had been under stress at the time.

He added that while Burns had been drinking at the time, he was not a habitual drinker.

Sheriff William Wood said: “This goes beyond merely unfortunate you should know it’s no way to behave towards anybody but especially your partner, who was clearly terrified as she had to leave the house.

He fined Burns £410.
