A community has united in grief following the death of a Fife baby.

Flowers and teddy bears were placed outside the Buckhaven home of five-month-old Hayley Davidson who passed away this week after sustaining serious injuries at the weekend.

While police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the youngster’s death, residents turned out to pay tribute to the tot.

One note simply read: “RIP Angel, always in our hearts”, while balloons and bunches of flowers were also placed outside the flat, near the town’s seafront.

One neighbour told The Courier: “At least the bairn’s at peace now.

“I don’t really know anything more than what the police have been saying but it’s been non-stop here since the weekend.

“There are always officers standing outside the house.

“Everyone just wants to know what has happened, I guess.”

Police officers continued to stand guard outside the youngster’s home, on West High Street, while forensic teams were also at the scene throughout yesterday.

Hayley had been under the care of medics since Sunday, after local police were called following a report of concern for a child.

Despite receiving treatment for her injuries at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh, she passed away on Wednesday afternoon.

A post-mortem examination is expected to take place in the coming days, though police are unable to give an exact timeframe as to when its findings will be known.

A police spokeswoman said: “A thorough and rigorous investigation is ongoing as officers progress with inquiries into Hayley’s death.”

Meanwhile, Chief Inspector Adrian Annandale, the local commander, based at Levenmouth police station, said: “This is an extremely tragic and sensitive case and I’d like to reassure Hayley’s family as well as the wider community that we’re conducting a robust investigation and appreciate the assistance provided.”
