Politicians link up with Kirkcaldy residents to donate to bra chain cancer campaign

Politicians proved they were abreast of local issues by donating bras to a Kirkcaldy cancer awareness campaign.

Councillors Lesley Laird, Judy Hamilton, Kay Carrington and MSPs Jayne Baxter and Claire Baker handed over bags of underwear to boost bra bunting which has been suspended from houses and lamp-posts in the Smeaton area.

Fife Council leader David Ross also turned up to give the campaign a lift.

The Smeaton bra chain is now made up of around 1,000 pieces of lingerie, after the idea of resident Vicki Lister, 33, took off. It was taken down temporarily following a single complaint.

The transportation department said hanging items from streetlights raised “safety concerns”. But the bunting was allowed to stay up, pending, a review after local councillors said council officers had made a boob.

It was put up in support of Vicki’s neighbour, Angela Taylor, who has breast cancer. Although it has a fun element, it carries the serious message of encouraging more people to be aware of the signs of breast cancer and get checked early.

Angela said: “When it started, it was meant to be outside the Windsor Hotel, where we’re having a ladies’ night. But in the last week and a bit it has just snowballed.

“We must have at least 1,500 to 2,000 bras 1,000 bras are already up.”

Ms Baxter praised the campaign. “I have had breast cancer and I got the care and treatment I needed because they got it early,” she said.

“This bunting makes people think about going and getting checked. There are official campaigns but people are more likely to listen to their friends and neighbours. It’s very powerful, to get the message across this way.”

Mrs Baker said: “It’s a great way to bring the community together. It’s a bit of fun but it carries the message about people protecting themselves against breast cancer, and reminding them to go to the doctor if they have any concerns.”

Mrs Hamilton added: “This has brought the community together, as well as raised awareness.

“Well done to all the organisers. I’m really proud of them.”
