Dundee City Council told it’s time to bin recycling site changes

Dundee City Council has been told to rethink its “confusing and unhelpful” recycling system which is making people drive for miles to dump household and garden waste.

Restrictions on debris that can be left at the Riverside and Baldovie sites were imposed to save money.

But making people drive up to 15 miles to deposit their household waste at Baldovie or garden waste at Riverside has, according to West End Lib Dem councillor Fraser Macpherson, “gone down like a lead balloon”.

He continued: “This is really not sensible for the council, given its requirement to meet Government recycling targets. I’ve called on the environment director to reconsider the policy and allow all recycling at both sites.”

He also feared air pollution in Dundee could be worsening because of the number of cars crossing the city with waste.

Labour’s Richard McCready agreed and Ferry Conservative member Derek Scott said: “Surely it would be better to allow people to use the recycling centre nearest to them and have a council vehicle transport big loads of waste to the appropriate location for processing?

“I urge the council SNP administration to look at this again.”

The Courier is investigating the issue in a series of articles this week. See Wednesday’s paper or our digital edition for the first part.
