Dundee University students to lead the cheers for Brian Cox

Given how much time actor Brian Cox spends in Hollywood, it is fitting that he is to be formally welcomed as rector of Dundee University next week with an American-style pep rally.

These typically take place in the run-up to a school or college’s important sporting events, to raise excitement before the big game and give students a chance to cheer on their team.

In Brian’s case, of course, the big game has already been won.

He was elected rector by the student body in February, taking more than two-thirds of the vote.

He has been able to visit the university since then, but his busy schedule has meant his installation has had to wait until now.

However, that has only given the students more time to make it extra special.

A video tribute to the Dundee-born actor has been made, featuring three of his predecessors as rector Stephen Fry, Fred MacAulay and Lorraine Kelly.

There will also be a lightning-fast romp through some of Brian’s biggest movie hits, courtesy of a group of students who have styled themselves The Brian Cox Experience.

Brian has been invited to give a speech, along with university principal Professor Pete Downes.

Natalie Coupar, of Dundee University Students Association, said, “Brian Cox is an extremely prestigious character and his high profile will be an asset to DUSA and the university.

“It will be a delight to welcome someone so dedicated to the university and the city.

“Our societies have worked extremely hard putting together their performances.”

All students and staff are invited to the event, at the students’ association on Monday evening. It is not open to the public.

Earlier in the day Brian is expected to attend a meeting of the university court, at which management will outline the latest phase in the university’s strategic review, including a cut of around 190 jobs.
