A Scottish rugby legend had to endure an exhausting workout at Abertay University in Dundee.

Scott Hastings, who achieved 65 caps for Scotland and played in two British and Irish Lions tours, was put through a High-Intensity Training (HIT) session at the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences.

The university’s department is pioneering HIT as a form of workout. Scientists at the university believe that working at a high intensity for short periods is more effective and realistic than more traditional, drawn-out exercise.

Hastings, 48, had to endure four 30-second stints on a bike, cycling at his maximum speed, broken up by two-minute breaks.

While he started effectively, the workout slowly wore down the former Scotland star who could be heard urging himself to “come on” by his third stint.

“It is a dynamic, explosive environment,” said Mr Hastings. “This experience has really helped me think about what exercise would be good for me in the future and it is incredible how much a HIT workout really benefits my fitness.”
