Big crowds anticipated for Burntisland Highland Games

Huge crowds are expected to descend on Burntisland today as the town hosts its annual Highland games.

The second-oldest event of its kind in the world, this year marks the 361st running of the games with organisers promising one of the best yet.

With competitors travelling from across the world to participate, organising committee secretary Joyce Kelley said visitors would be in for a treat.

“The entries for this year are really strong,” she said. “We’ve had so many in the dancing event that we’re having to start at 10am to fit them all in.

“There are competitors from across the world Australia, Canada and America. The organisation is more or less done and all we hope is that the weather stays nice.

“It’s a hugely popular day and if the sun shines then we’re hoping for a couple of thousand people to turn out.”

The event is traditionally held on the third Monday of July, to coincide with the Fife holiday fortnight.

The games will have an earlier start of 10am for the dancing competition.

The rest of the games get under way at noon following the crowning of the summer king and queen and a procession through the streets.
