Dundee keeper praised for grabbing chance with both hands

Kyle Letheren: outstanding against Falkirk.

Dundee boss John Brown has praised keeper Kyle Letheren for his fine form between the sticks.

The big stopper, who was signed after impressing on trial during the summer, had previously endured a lengthy spell as No 2 to Cammy Bell at Kilmarnock.

Now, though, Brown believes the 25-year-old Welshman is flourishing thanks to regular first-team football and was outstanding again last weekend against Falkirk despite conceding a freakish stoppage-time goal.

Bomber said: “Kyle was fantastic for us on Saturday. To be fair, he’s waited a while to get regular first-team football and has grasped this opportunity.

“But he showed as early as pre-season that he’s a quality keeper and has been working ever so hard.

“No doubt he’s been a big factor in us getting six clean sheets in 13 games. But hopefully he’s not as busy as he was against Falkirk when we go to Hamilton this weekend, because we want to be creating more chances at the other end.”

Last Saturday’s game saw former skipper Stephen O’Donnell return to the match-day squad for the first time since sustaining a serious knee injury at the start of this year.

Brown admitted it was great to see the midfielder back involved but he insists the player still needs more game time under his belt before he can considered fully fit once again.

The manager added: “It was probably a bit early for Stephen to have been on the bench, if I’m being honest. But it would have been good if we needed his experience for 10 or 15 minutes coming off the bench.

“It would have given him a boost to be back involved and the fans too when they saw him warming up. He’ll start to feature in more reserve games and hopefully be more involved in the weeks ahead.”
