Peter and Liz McColgan’s divorce finalised

Former Olympian Liz McColgan has officially divorced from her husband Peter.

Decree of divorce, a legal order granting the termination of marriage, was granted by Sheriff Peter Paterson in a brief hearing at Arbroath Sheriff Court on Monday.

Solicitors for both parties presented a joint minute detailing how the couple’s assets would be divided.

Representing Mr McColgan, solicitor Joanne Romanis asked Sheriff Paterson to grant the divorce quickly.

She said: “This has been an anxious case and we would be very grateful if this could be looked at today. We don’t want to leave any stone unturned.”

Sheriff Paterson read the joint minute immediately, then officially granted decree of divorce.

Ms McColgan, who was at court earlier but left before the hearing, took to her twitter account to express her delight. She wrote: “Woo hoo it’s official I am divorced :-)”

The divorce comes just over a year since Ms McColgan was cleared of assaulting her husband at their home near Carnoustie and follows the liquidation of their health club business.

Agreement on the divorce was established after a full day of negotiations at court a month ago. A third party was then appointed to value the couple’s assets and divide them accordingly. This has not been made public.
