Scottish Cup derby day for Montrose and Arbroath

Scottish Cup derby day for Montrose and Arbroath

The derby element is likely to make the Scottish Cup tie between Montrose and Arbroath one of the most keenly contested of the second round.

Points against high-flying Stranraer and Berwick Rangers have helped Montrose slowly regain their confidence and they have climbed off the bottom league to a mid-table spot right next to the Lichties.

It was Montrose’s 3-0 league win against their rivals that kickstarted their season.

Steven Tweed is doubtful the visitors will be caught cold again.

“In the last three or four games we have not started particularly well,” said Tweed.

“Our battling, never-say-die attitude is tremendous but it would be nice not to have to come from behind.”

The suspension of Chris Hegarty and injuries to Hugh Davidson and Terry Masson will enforce changes on the Gable Endies squad.

The signing of former Peterhead and East Fife defender Dougie Cameron has not been cleared so he will not play.

Tweed is hoping that another new signing is imminent but it, too, may not be completed in time for today’s derby.

Arbroath manager Paul Sheerin is only too well aware of the importance of this Saturday’s tie.

Lichties have the chance to make amends for the defeat at Links Park back in August.

Sheerin says the players are desperate to get the right result this time around.

He said, “It is certainly an exciting draw for us, although it might have been better to have been playing it at Gayfield.

“This tie means so much for everybody involved because of the history and rivalry between the two clubs.

“We are definitely wanting to rectify things from the last time but I think the players will be much better prepared on this occasion.

“I don’t think some of us knew quite what to expect from this derby, but we know now it is far more than just another game for the fans and everyone else involved at the club so we know we have to make it through to the next round.’

Arbroath’s injury problems have eased with only Marc McCulloch and Kieran McAnespie being doubtful for the clash.

Sheerin expects to have all of the players who featured in last Saturday’s eleventh-hour victory over Clyde available.
