Glasgow Warriors’ Jon Welsh in line for his second Scotland cap

Jon Welsh made his debut against Italy last year.

Jon Welsh is a late contender to be the only change to the Scotland team to take on Ireland in the third match of the 2013 RBS Six Nations on Sunday.

The Glasgow tight-head prop, who made his Scotland debut against Italy in last year’s championship, was part of the Warriors’ record-breaking team against Dragons on Friday.

He was one of 13 players called into the national squad.

Interim head coach Scott Johnson will be forced into one change from the team who beat Italy 34-10 at Murrayfield two weeks ago, with Lions prop Euan Murray absenting himself from action for faith reasons as the match is on a Sunday.

Welsh can play either side of the scrum and made his only Scotland appearance so far at loose-head when he was called up at five minutes’ notice for the final Six Nations match in Rome last year, being arguably the best Scottish performer on the day.

The former Whitecraigs and GHA player then needed surgery to a shoulder injury after being injured in training during Scotland’s summer tour and his absence gave Warriors team-mate Ryan Grant the chance to establish himself as the premier loose-head, missing only one match since.

Welsh returned to action in November and played at tight-head for Scotland A in their win over England two weeks ago before playing against the Dragons.

Other than the one enforced change, Johnson is unlikely to change his starting personnel for the visit of injury-hit Ireland, but there is a good chance the coach may seek to shake up his replacements order.

Specialist open-side John Barclay is available again after a strong showing for the Warriors in the 60-3 drubbing of the Dragons, and may be a more varied option than David Denton. Former Dundee High pupil Richie Vernon is another alternative.

Alex Dunbar and Peter Murchie may put pressure of Max Evans for the reserve back position after their performances for Glasgow last week.

The 13 added to the 22 remaining from the Italy game are: John Welsh, Dougie Hall, Tom Ryder, John Barclay, Sean Kennedy, Peter Horne, Alex Dunbar, Peter Murchie (all Glasgow), Richie Vernon, Alasdair Dickinson (both Sale Sharks), Grant Gilchrist (Edinburgh), Tom Heathcote (Bath), Nikki Walker (Worcester).
