Students shocked by attack on woman close to The Hub

Police hunting a man who preyed on a woman in Dundee said on Monday night they were interviewing new witnesses.

The 20-year-old victim was walking on Hawkhill, near the junction with Horsewater Wynd and close to The Hub student accommodation, when a man approached her and inappropriately fondled her at around 10.30pm on Sunday.

The victim was left shocked but uninjured and he made off in the direction of Horsewater Wynd. She then phoned the police to raise the alarm.

Officers carried out door-to-door inquiries, visited nearby premises and issued a public appeal for witnesses on Monday. This led to a number of new people coming forward to help with the investigation.

Anxious students and nearby shop staff have spoken of their shock at hearing about the attack.

Benita McGaffin (19), who is a second-year psychology student, lives in accommodation close to where the incident took place.

“It’s not a nice thing to hear about,” she said. “It’s such a friendly place usually. Our accommodation is really safe and security-orientated, which is really nice.

“We wouldn’t go out on our own at night anyway as we always stay together.”

Second-year geography and environmental science student Jenni Chambers (20) said, “I don’t like walking in the dark anyway, especially if I’m on my own. Something like this does make people nervous.

“I have never heard of anything like this happening last year.”

The attacker is described as being between 20 and 30, with a brown complexion, possibly well tanned or of Asian ethnicity, about 5ft 5in, of slim build, clean shaven and with black hair shaved short. He was wearing a light-coloured jacket, khaki or brown cargo-style trousers and was carrying a black rucksack, which appeared full, over both shoulders.

Anyone with any information on the incident is asked to call police on 0300 111 2222.
