Police in Dundee have launched an investigation into weekend vandalism at a city cemetery.
The force has appealed to local people who could help with its inquiries after as many as a hundred headstones were found toppled or damaged at Eastern Cemetery (link).
The city council owns and maintains the site, and asked the police to investigate the destruction that will have brought heartache to many.
Police have issued an appeal for help in tracing the culprits.
A spokesman said: ”Inquiries are ongoing today and we would appeal for anyone with information to come forward.”
Local councillor Will Dawson has added his criticism of those responsible.
”These headstones are historic monuments in many respects,” he said. ”It’s bloody-minded and I would urge anybody with information to contact the police.”
Fellow councillor George Regan has described the damage as ”sheer madness”.
