When Joe McCafferty says he has been running for as long as he can remember, that is likely longer than anyone else in this year’s Glenrothes Road Running Festival.
At 75 the retired builder’s labourer is proof age is no barrier to taking part in the event on June 26.
“This will be my 19th consecutive race in the festival,” said the Rimbleton runner, “and I have no plans to hang up my running shoes just yet.”
Glasgow-born Joe moved to Glenrothes in 1961 and played football for a number of local clubs, including Thornton Hibs and Star Hearts.
He still turns out regularly in five-a-side games, such is his determination to keep fit and active.
He added,”I also work behind the scenes with Glenrothes Strollers and we are encouraging as many of our young players as possible, from all our age categories, to join us in whatever of the events on the race programme at the festival suits them best.”
In the run-up to the race, Joe is already completing the 10k route three times a week, so he is pleased with the way his training schedule is panning out.
