Last year’s visit to Dundee was one of the highlights of a major UK tour for the Lady Boys of Bangkok and secured the city a place in the hearts of performers and organisers alike.
The show has enjoyed sell-out performances at the Caird Hall and at Baxter Park, but it is at the latter that it has found a favourite home in Scotland.
Its flamboyant performers will return to that venue on July 1 for an eight-day stay in the city during which time the Lady Boys will put on a staggering 17 performances.
Each will have a capacity of 384, with the auditorium boasting cabaret-style tables, seating and a bar.
While the stage show has always proved spectacular, there has been plenty of drama off-stage too during the extravaganza’s previous visits.
Last year, the police had to be called in after thieves sneaked into the dressing room at Baxter Park and made off with the Lady Boys of Bangkok’s kilts.
Five outfits of Highland dress were taken and it took the intervention of a city kilt hire firm to ensure that the show went on.
And in 2013, a near 600-strong audience at the Caird Hall had to be briefly evacuated from their seats after the red-hot show proved too much for smoke alarms.
The fire brigade were called after artificial smoke from a backstage smoke machine triggered an alarm.
Organisers will be hoping that this summer’s visit proves every bit as successful, but is a little lighter on unexpected incidents.
Creative director Phillip Gandey said he was “thrilled” to see the show return to Dundee.
He said: “It’s a new year and of course that means an all-new Lady Boys show is on the road for a glamorous UK-wide tour.
“Dundee was a highlight of the Scottish leg of the tour last year as the audiences really got into the spirit of the show.
“Our brand-new production, ‘Forever Yours…x”, has been in the making since last November and we’re very excited to share it with the people of Dundee again this year.”
Residents living around Baxter Park made a small number of complaints to Dundee City Council with regards noise nuisance from last year’s event.
Neighbours suggested that the performances be limited to one a night and a revisiting of parking arrangements.
There have, however, been no objections lodged with the council with regards plans for the 2016 tour.
