Fergus Ewing’s dismay at Electricity Market Reform plans

The Energy Secretary Fergus Ewing has revealed “profound dismay” at the UK Government’s proposals for Electricity Market Reform, warning that present plans could jeopardise prospects for jobs and investment in Scotland.

He published a lengthy letter sent to Westminster opposite number Ed Davey setting out a number of objections, including concerns over risk to the security of existing power supplies and the lack of support and ambition for offshore wind developments.

Mr Ewing warns that the latter could cast “significant doubt” on plans for Round 3 and Scottish Territorial Waters wind power schemes, including three major projects which could be worth up to £15 billion in investment off Scotland’s east coast.

His letter also describes the threat of wave and tidal technologies being squeezed out as “real and unconscionable”.

“The UK Government must listen to the concerns raised by industry that would see EMR failing in its objectives,” the energy secretary said.

He raised concerns over the Energy Bill’s apparent power to close the renewables obligation scheme currently used to subsidise and incentivise renewables investment in Scotland.
