Dundee United need to improve from back to front

Florent Sinama Pongolle.
Florent Sinama Pongolle.

When Kilmarnock were reduced to 10 men and United equalised from the penalty spot in the 24th minute on Saturday, there would have been few willing to wager that Gary Locke’s side would ultimately hold on to secure a draw.

Add in the fact that Killie had been humbled the week before losing 5-2 at home to Partick Thistle and their confidence would not have been at the highest, it was all set up for the Tangerines at a wind and rain-swept Rugby Park to go on and “storm” to victory.

Instead, they spurned the chances they created and ultimately the result has to be regarded as two points dropped.

There were though positives for United boss Mixu Paatelainen including the debut display of Florent Sinama Pongolle. Some of the Frenchman’s linking play was a delight to watch and once he is fully up to speed, he should become a key player for the Tangerines.

However, United continue to look shaky at the back with Kris Boyd totally unmarked at his goal.

Following his opener, United struggled to deal with basic crosses into their box and it seemed certain that Killie would increase their advantage before they were reduced to 10 men.

If the Tangerines can tighten up at the back and end the profligacy in front of goal, then hopefully they can at last win again next week when they face Partick Thistle at home.

And finally . . . special mention must go to the 419 hardy souls who were supporting United at Rugby Park on Saturday.

On a day blighted by travel chaos and horrendous weather, each and every one deserves plaudits for making the journey to Ayrshire to back their team.
