The founder of Piperdam golf and leisure resort outside Dundee, Tom Smith, has died of lung cancer at the age of 74.
Born in Forfar, Mr Smith was the son of a farm manager and the family moved around with his father’s work.
He was educated at various schools in Angus, then became a motorcycle mechanic in Brechin.
He moved to Canada at the age of 21 where he again worked as a motorcycle mechanic, before moving into real estate and then working for a transport company.
Mr Smith married Riona in Canada in 1959.
She was originally from Forfar as well and their mothers were friends taking their families to country dancing together.
The couple moved back to Brechin in 1960 where they stayed for a few years before moving to Auchtermuchty, where Mr Smith ran a garage business for 37 years.
They had two sons Murdie, born in 1959, and Alistair in 1966.
They bought Piperdam in 1988 but only moved from Auchtermuchty in 1998, and Mr Smith spent the next two decades building the resort into what it is today with Riona working as company secretary. They retired three years ago.
Mr Smith is survived by his wife, Murdie and Alistair and four grandchildren.
