Young Farmers from across Perthshire are standing poised to pack up three tonnes of potatoes this weekend, ready for delivery to foodbanks in and around the county.
The staple food source has been donated by Donald Mackie, of Broomburn, near Forgandenny.
Perthshire vice-chairman David Barclay said young farmers from across the district are very passionate about supporting individuals in Scotland who otherwise would not have been able to enjoy some of the fantastic produce that Scottish farmers grow.
“Between April 2013 and March 2014, more than 900,000 people who were in crisis in the UK were provided with three days’ emergency food through foodbanks,” he said.
“Some 330,000 of these were children.
“Through the donation of a stable ingredient such as potatoes, we hope that the foodbanks in Scotland can continue to help individuals who are facing difficult times and Young Farmers are very proud to be leading this particular project.”
The national chairman of the Scottish Association of Young Farmers, Laura Fleming, added: “Our Young Farmers throughout Scotland are conscientious individuals who have a real sense of community and, through fundraising or initiatives such as this one with the Perthshire district, we can play a role in supporting those facing hardship.
“I commend the members leading this project, and would encourage anyone who can spare an hour to join them on Sunday”
The event will take place at Pitmurthly Farm, Perth, and the Young Farmers are looking for volunteers to help pack the potatoes. Contact David on 07854 570351.
