Definitive proof that Jim Henry played in a winning Black Trophy team has come from one of his victorious team-mates.
The former Dundee United favourite has been the subject of a few articles in BwB since Jim’s friend Davie Martin contacted me asking for info on Jim’s involvement in this particular trophy.
The trophy was competed for by select teams from the various U/18 boys leagues in Scotland.
Dennis Elder, also a regular contributor to BwB, played in the game and reveals they won the final, which was played at Dawson Park in Dundee.
Dennis couldn’t give the name of the opposition in the final, but remembers beating Ayrshire in Kilmarnock and Queen’s Park Youth in Glasgow.
“Jim Henry was my Dundee youth select team-mate when we won the trophy in season 65-66,” said Dennis, of Americanmuir Road in the city.
“I’m sure the score in the final was 5-2.
“The teams was – McAlpine (Butterburn YC), Elder (Craigmore Boys Club), Keir (Butterburn Youth Club); Milne (Craigmore Boys Club), Hardie (Arbroath Lads Club), Unknown; Moir (Butterburn Youth Club), Petrie (Arbroath Lads Club), Ferguson (Butterburn Youth Club), Henry (St Francis), Clark (St Francis). Subs – Reilly (St Francis), Duncan (Butterburn Youth Club).
“Ged Reilly and John Duncan possibly played in the semi-final.
“I can’t recall all the goalscorers, but Jimmy Milne may have scored one.”
Dennis continued: “From that team, in addtion to Jim Henry going on to Dundee United, Aberdeen and Forfar, I signed for North End juniors, then had a spell with Dundee FC before going on to enjoy 16 seasons with Blairgowrie juniors.
“Goalkeeper Hamish McAlpine also joined North End, then on to a great career with Dundee United.
“John Duncan went to Dundee, and got a big transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.
“Grant Keir, Dougie Clark and Ged Reilly all went to Broughty Athletic juniors, with Ged going to Tannadice to Dundee United and possibly a spell with Forfar Athletic.
“Jimmy Milne signed for St Joseph’s juniors, while Ian Hardie possibly signed on at Arbroath Vics.”
Dennis concluded: “When I was with Dundee, I actually played against Ged in the ‘wee’ (reserve) derby at Tannadice.”
Dennis also sent in a photo of the shield he received for winning the tournament.
