Local thug faces jail after breaking ex-partner’s jaw because he had lost his jeans

A vicious thug who broke his ex-partner’s jaw in a horror attack because he had lost a pair of jeans was today behind bars.

Shaun Curran

Shaun Curran was told he faces a jail term “measured in years” over the brutal assault on Jasmin Valentine at an address in Arbroath.

The pair had split up but continued living together until her new property was ready for her to move in to.

On August 5 last year an argument broke out because a pair of Curran’s jeans were missing.

Fiscal depute Charmaine Gilmartin told Dundee Sheriff Court that Miss Valentine playfully told Curran to “shut up” but that “enraged” him.

She said: “He then punched her full force twice in the stomach, causing her to double over and vomit.

“He screamed at her to get out and said he would throw her down the stairs.

“She couldn’t move and he grabbed her hair. She was unable to shake him off.

“He kept saying he was sick of her.

“He then let her drop to the floor and punched her full force twice then dragged her.

“He then punched her on the cheek and she was spitting blood.

“On seeing this he immediately became apologetic.

“She didn’t report the incident to police until August 14 then went to hospital the following day.

“She was later found to have a fractured jaw.”

Curran, 24, of Emislaw Drive, Arbroath, pleaded guilty on indictment to a charge of assault to severe injury committed on August 5 2017 at his home address.

Defence solicitor Sarah Russo said: “He knows his liberty is at risk.”

Sheriff Alastair Brown deferred sentence until next month and remanded Curran in custody meantime.

He said: “For an exceptionally serious assault, what other than a prison sentence to be measured in years would be in any way appropriate?”
