A man has been jailed for pouring bleach over his pregnant ex-partner, causing her skin to “bubble”.
Neil Barclay, 41, was locked up for assaulting Joanne McKillop by pouring the corrosive liquid on her body in Greenlee Drive on June 8 last year.
When questioned by police about the attack, Barclay broke down in tears after learning that Ms McKillop was pregnant, Dundee Sheriff Court heard.
Barclay previously pleaded guilty to the single charge on indictment before he was due to stand trial.
Appearing from custody, he returned to the dock for sentencing before Sheriff Lorna Drummond.
Solicitor John Boyle said that Barclay – who served a 15-month prison sentence for assault in 2012 – had used his time on remand to reflect on his actions.
He said: “His expression of disgust and shame for the behaviour I have no doubt is sincere.
“The complainer has attended to see him on a number of occasions at Perth Prison and has naturally discussed certain things that have arisen from this incident.
“He’s clearly spent a significant amount of time thinking about his behaviour and has expressed those thoughts to the complainer and, indeed, to me.”
Mr Boyle believed that Barclay could be dealt with by a community-based disposal but Sheriff Drummond said: “You caused injury to your ex-partner Ms McKillop.
“You poured bleach on her which ran down her back, on to her head and legs and caused her skin to bubble.
“I have no doubt that was impulsive and inherently dangerous behaviour. Your partner was pregnant at the time but you did not know that.
“The only appropriate disposal is custody for a significant period.”
Barclay was jailed for 27 months backdated to July 26 last year.
