Teen stole council tractor and went on joyride

A TEENAGER who stole a council-owned tractor and drove it round a building site has been locked up.

At Dundee Sheriff Court, Ryan Simpson, 19, of Carlochie Place, admitted stealing a vehicle in Earn Crescent on February 15.

Fiscal depute Alan Kempton said the tractor, owned by Dundee City Council, was parked on a building site with keys in the ignition.

The fiscal said; “Around 11am witnesses heard the engine of the tractor start up and ran over to where it was parked.

“Accused was seen driving a short distance within the site and witnesses shouted.

“He got out of the tractor and he and other male associates ran away from the locus.”

Simpson also admitted a further three charges of theft or attempted at Craigie High School, Garnet Terrace. He admitted attempting to steal two bicycles from the bike shed at the school by pulling at the bikes and trying to break their security chains and padlocks, both on January 18. He also pleaded guilty to stealing a jacket, from the same location, two days later.

He also admitted trying to cut through a security chain with a hacksaw and attempting to steal a mountain bike, at Asda, Milton of Craigie, on January 22.

Simpson further admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by brandishing a hacksaw in a threatening manner towards Ryan Ross, at the same location on the same date.

And he admitted acting in a racially aggravated manner which caused or was intended to cause Ihsan Haq alarm and distress at a shop in Hilltown on September 21 last year. Sheriff George Way sentenced Simpson to 12 months’ detention to “wipe Simpson’s slate clean”.
